The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Police Officer Standards and Training Council’s Field Services Training Division is offering a one (1) day training program on “Use-of-Force: What Every Officer Needs to Know.”  The seminar will be presented by Eric Daigle of the Daigle Law Group.

This seminar is designed for all levels of law enforcement personnel from patrol officers to executive leadership.  The training provides an in-depth legal analysis, and practical interpretation of Use-of-Force Law, with a special emphasis on the evolving standards surrounding less-lethal applications and Electronic Control Weapons (ECWs)such as TASER ® devices.

Through case studies, legal precedents, and national trends, this course equips participants with a foundational understanding of the constitutional principles, civil liability, exposure, and reporting requirements associated with Use-of-Force incidents.

Use-of-Force Civil Liability:
¿ Overview of Federal Standards of 42 USC Section 1983 litigation
¿ Legal standards relating to Fourth Amendment violations
¿ Comparative Use-of-Force Standards across the United States

Electronic Control Weapon (ECW) Liability:
¿ Current legal and operational issues addressing TASER ® use
¿ Case studies of TASER ® incidents across the country
¿ The impact of ECW deployment on overall Use-of-Force and legal standards

Reporting Use-of-Force:
¿ Strategies for drafting comprehensive and defensible Use-of-Force reports
¿ Managing video evidence and narrative alignment with visual recordings
¿ Understanding interpretation challenges in video-documented confrontations

Tuition for this course is $75. Lunch may be purchased at local restaurants. The uniform Dress Code for POST In-Service training (General Notice 23-02) will be in effect. We ask that all training supervisors inform assigned personnel that they are required to dress accordingly.
