The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Police Officer Standards and Training Council’s Field Services Training Division is offering a one (1) day training program on “First Amendment 101.” The seminar will be presented by Attorney Eric Daigle of the Daigle Law Group.

This seminar is designed to provide law enforcement professionals, particularly supervisors, command staff, and public information officers, with a comprehensive understanding of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, it’s constitutional protections and how it intersects with modern policing practices.  The training will address current legal trends, landmark case law, and real-world operational challenges related to protests, public assembly, free speech, the press, religion, and the rights of public employees.

This training draws from U.S. Supreme and Appellate Court decisions, DOJ recommendations, and national after-action reports.  This training will assist agencies build policies and practices that protect civil rights while maintaining public safety.  Topics will include protest management, lawful use-of-force during demonstrations, mass arrest protocols, time-place-manner restrictions, and issues related to officer conduct on and off-duty, including social media use.

Reporting Instructions
Students successfully completing the course will receive Review Training Credit in the following area(s):  Area 201               Constitutional Law (7) Hours

Tuition for this course is $75.  Lunch may be purchased at local restaurants.  The uniform Dress Code for POST In-Service training (General Notice 23-02) will be in effect.  We ask that all training supervisors inform assigned personnel that they are required to dress accordingly.
