Full Description: The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Police Officer Standards and Training Council’s Field Services Training Division is providing a three (3) day seminar titled “Field Training Officer ‘Train the Trainer’ (T-t-T).”  The instructors for this training will be POST staff member Field Program Consultant, Matthew Solak and Lieutenant Christopher DiFalco of the Ridgefield Police Department.

This is NOT a Field Training Officer course.  Enrollment is only open to officers that have been POST certified FTOs for at least three (3) years and wish to become new FTO instructors.  Enrollees must be a POST certified instructor for at least three (3) years and have attended an MOI/BID course.  This course will permit those who complete the course to train officers to become FTOs.  You might also be asked to teach or assist in teaching future FTO classes at the POST Academy.

The purpose of this class is to provide guidance on developing best practices for a police Field Training Officer Program, and to explore and learn how content from adjacent domains in problem-based learning, andragogy, and reflective learning can be used to enhance field training for new police officers.  This class will also spend a significant portion of time researching FTO programs in use and participants will leave the class with the material needed to successfully instruct officers in the current FTO model adopted by the POST Council.

This class is limited to fifteen (15) attendees.  Preference will be given to those individuals assigned to a satellite academy or an agency’s training division who perform agency training.

Topics to be addressed:
• Overview and brief history of the FTO process in Connecticut
• How to implement andragogy strategies that align with probationary police officers’ expectations, lived experience, and goals
• Strengths and limitations of the San Jose model of field training
• Discussion of contemporary and emergent field training models (Reno, Police Officer Training, NextGen) that are in use
• How to effectively and through managed programs, involve community partners in the field training process
• The essential importance of incorporating officer wellness and human performance strategies into the FTO program
• The difference between evaluation and documentation, and the importance of knowing how and when to use both to implement a successful field training program
• Reports, documentation, and testing procedures to sustain a 21st century field training program

This will be a rigorous and academic three-day training program.  Students who enroll in this class should be experienced FTOs who are comfortable thinking broadly about the topic and challenging assumptions and should be experienced police instructors conversant in effective training strategies.  Those that complete this training might be requested to teach or assist in teaching future FTO classes at the POST Academy.

Students successfully completing the course will receive Review Training Credit in area 705      FTO Responsibility (18 hours)

Directions to Location: The training is scheduled from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. daily at the Connecticut Police Academy, 285 Preston Avenue, Meriden, 06450.

Reporting Instructions: There is no tuition for this course. Lunch may be purchased at local restaurants. The uniform Dress Code for POST In-Service training (General Notice 23-02) will be in effect.
