The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Police Officer Standards and Training Council’s Field Services Training Division is providing a half-day seminar titled “Adolescent SBIRT – Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (ASBIRT).”  The training will be instructed by staff of the Wheeler Clinic Prevention, Wellness, and Recovery Division, Plainville office.

A-SBIRT is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for adolescents with substance use disorders, as well as those who are at risk of developing disorders.

Primary care centers, hospital emergency rooms, trauma centers, and other community settings provide opportunities for early intervention with at-risk substance users before more severe consequences occur.

The purpose of the adolescent SBIRT program is to implement the screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment public health model for adolescents (12-17 years old) in primary care and community health settings (e.g., health centers, hospital systems, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), preferred-provider organizations (PPOs) health plans, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC), behavioral health centers, pediatric health care providers, children’s hospitals, etc.) and schools with a focus on screening for underage drinking, opioid use, and other substance use.

The SBIRT program effectively addresses substance use by integrating three core components:

• Screening quickly assesses the severity of substance use and identifies the appropriate level of treatment.
• Brief intervention focuses on increasing insight and awareness regarding substance use and motivation toward behavioral change.
• Referral to treatment provides those identified as needing more extensive treatment with access to specialty care.

Students successfully completing the course will receive Review Training Credit in area 407 - Substance Abuse Issues (4 hours)

Reporting Instructions
The training is scheduled for 12:00 PM to 4:00 P.M. There is no tuition for this course. The uniform Dress Code for POST In-Service training (General Notice 23-02) will be in effect. We ask that all training supervisors inform assigned personnel that they are required to dress accordingly.
