Full Description
The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Police Officer Standards and Training Council’s Field Services Training Division, in cooperation with the Eastern Region De-escalation Training Center at the University of New Haven (UNH), is offering a one-day (1) training seminar titled “De-Escalation for Safer Outcomes: Practical Strategies for Law Enforcement.” Instruction will be provided by trainers from the Eastern Region De-escalation Training Center.

This comprehensive training is aligned with the Law Enforcement De-Escalation Training Act (LEDTA) and provides law enforcement professionals with practical strategies to safely manage conflict, crisis, and high-stress encounters. Participants will learn effective communication and de-escalation techniques, crisis intervention skills, critical decision-making, legal and policy considerations, trauma-informed responses, community resource utilization, and officer wellness strategies designed to enhance safety, reduce use-of-force incidents, and strengthen community trust.

Training Highlights:
• Evidence-Based De-Escalation Strategies
Learn a standardized, research-driven approach to de-escalation that promotes safer outcomes for officers and community members.
• Critical Decision-Making Under Pressure
Strengthen assessment and decision-making skills through the integration of Critical Decision-Making (CDM), ICAT-informed principles, and ethical leadership practices.
• Effective Crisis Recognition and Response
Develop the ability to recognize and appropriately respond to individuals experiencing mental illness, substance use disorders, trauma, developmental disabilities, and medical emergencies.
• Advanced Tactical Communication Skills
Build proficiency in active listening, empathy, rapport building, conflict resolution, verbal and non-verbal communication, and behavioral influence techniques.
• Officer Wellness & Collaborative Public Safety

Enhance resilience, emotional regulation, and stress management while learning how to effectively partner with mental health professionals and community resources to support crisis response and long-term solutions.

Students successfully completing the course will receive 6 hours Review Training Credit in area 312 (De-Escalation).

Reporting Instructions
There is no tuition for this course. Lunch may be purchased at local restaurants. The uniform Dress Code for POST In-Service training (General Notice 23-02) will be in effect. We ask that all training supervisors inform assigned personnel that they are required to dress accordingly. Training will be at the Connecticut Police Academy, 285 Preston Avenue, Meriden, 06450 from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
